		Alison's Favorite Sounds
			v.1.1

In this zip are revised sounds for all of GPL's cars, drawn from several sources. Also I've included modified skid and grass sounds. The skid sound is louder so it is easier to hear over the engine, and the grass sound is more realistic, in my opinion.

Most of the sounds are from Patrick and Thomas Brown, but I've included sounds from other sources as well, and modified several sounds to balance the volumes so that they seem appropriate to me.

This version includes files for both the "stock" GPL.exe, and GPL.exe as modified by Nigel Pattinson's Carsound utility. Nigel's utility modifies GPL to use a different engine sound for each car.

Installation -----------------------------------------

If you don't want to modify your GPL.exe and are happy with five sounds, just unzip this Zip file into your GPL\sounds folder. If you don't like any or all of the sounds, simply delete them from the sounds folder to return to the original Papy sounds.

If you want to have different sounds for each car, see below for details on where to get Nigel's Carsound utility, and follow the instructions that come with the utility for installing it. Then unzip this Zip file into your GPL\sounds folder. Note that the Carsound utility makes GPL use 3-character names for each car, so if you don't like these sounds, you'll have to substitute something else with the same names, or go back to your original GPL.exe, which you can copy off your CD into your GPL folder.

To save a little disk space, if you're using the Carsound utility, you can delete all the sounds with more than three-character names, like brmh16.wav and cosworth.wav. If you're *not* using the Carsound utility, you can delete all the sounds with three-character names, like brm.wav and eag.wav.

Patrick and Thomas' Carsounds -----------------------

repco.wav, bra.wav, mur.wav: Patrick's original Brabham sound modified by Thomas Brown to be slightly higher in pitch and a little louder. [See Notes below]

brmh16.wav, brm.wav: Also a mod of Pat's BRM engine; Thomas evened out the pitch so that it's uniform, and boosted the sound as above for more powerful sounding engine.

weslake.wav, cov.wav: Taken from an in-car recording of a Ferrari F40, with lowered pitch.

ferrari.wav, fer.wav: A P4 Ferrari sample with increased pitch.

eag-tb.wav: Taken from an in-car recording of a Ferrari F50. [See Notes below]

f2f3-lotus18.wav: This is by Patrick from a Lotus 18. [To try this, rename f2f3.wav to something else and rename this to f2f3.wav.]

Sounds from Other Sources ---------------------------

eag.wav: Papy's original Ferrari sound, with volume change. I like this sound better than any sound I've heard for the Weslake V-12.

cosworth.wav and lot.wav: A recording of a Cosworth-engined sports car, from somewhere on the Web, increased in volume slightly to match the other cars in the set.

grass.wav: By Tom Pabst for Sears Point.

f2f3.wav dated 10/10/99: By Ross McGregor.

Notes ----------------------------------------------

I've renamed Thomas' eag.wav to eag-tb.wav because I like the original Papyrus Ferrari sound better, so that's what I'm using for the Eagle (see above). You can try Thomas' sound by renaming eag.wav to something else and renaming eag-tb.wav to eag.wav.

I modified Thomas' Repco sound to be a little quieter so it wouldn't drown out the other cars. I'm using a slightly louder version of this sound for the Murasama as well because to me it sounds more like I remember the real Honda sounding (a bellow rising to an ear-piercing shriek) than any other sound I've heard for the Murasama. And it's a great sound. Since the Murasama and Repco operate in very different RPM ranges, the Murasama sounds quite different from the Brabham-Repco on the track.

Carsound Utility -----------------------------------

The three-character sounds such as eag.wav and mur.wav can only be used if you apply Nigel Pattinson's Carsound utility, which changes the names of the sound files used by GPL to fer.wav, lot.wav, brm.wav, bra.wav, cos.wav, and adds eag.wav and mur.wav.

The Carsound utility is available at The Pits, http://www.theuspits.com. The Zip file is at http://www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/files/carsound.zip. I've tried it with GPL 1.2, and it works fine.
